Total Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder Replacement

The shoulder is a “ball-and-socket” joint that consists of the upper arm bone, shoulder blade, and collarbone. This joint is one of the most flexible joints in the body and allows for a full range of motion. Unfortunately, because of continous use and intensive routines the shoulder is a common area for injury and instability.

Fortunately, many shoulder conditions can be effectively managed through non-surgical techniques. However, there are situations where surgery may be needed.

In cases of severe arthritis, surgery may be used to correct the condition. Surgery can help patients get back to a healthy and active life. Sometimes total shoulder replacement may be the best treatment option. Total shoulder replacement is a procedure to replace the damaged cartilage within the shoulder joint. This procedure helps relieve pain in patients with arthritis. The procedure may also be performed in patients who have rotator cuff tear arthropathy, or avascular necrosis.

Dr. Davis will examine each patient and provide the best treatment plan for their situation. In cases where the glenoid bone is too damaged, Dr. Davis will consider a different approach. In some cases, Dr. Davis may only replace the ball and leave the glenoid socket untouched, especially if it is still in good condition. The glenoid is the socket of the ball-and-socket, part of the shoulder joint. It is part of the scapula or shoulder blade. If you are experiencing shoulder pain or are in need of shoulder replacement surgery, it’s important to make an appointment for a consultation.
